Sometime in high school, while doing an assignment for French class, I came across Edgar Georges’ “La Cage” here. It stuck with me. Below is the original and my present-day, amateur translation.

The original:

La Cage
Edgar Georges, 2010

Donnez-moi raison, laissez-moi crier
Pour nous tous
Du haut de la colline
Que la pureté revienne

My translation:

The Cage
Edgar Georges, 2010
Translated by Gabriel Konar-Steenberg, 2026

Hamsters, awake
The straw awaits you, there
And the looks that lay into you when seeking the absolute
A house, nice clothes, some travel…

Wake up and break the algorithm of the monster that crushes you!
The daisy’s petals will one day run out
The wind will change beneath this crystalline sky
The bowls of youth will soon be drained
The forest will hold no more secrets, no charm

And on the path to the cage they will say: “Let us march straight towards freedom!”

Say I’m right, let me shout
For us all
From the top of the hill
May purity return
